I drove it for 5000 miles, and I was ready to give the car back to BMW, the thing was completely unpredictable to drive, specially in high speed corners (I had to use the whole road just to be safe), the thing would "tramline" on any irregularity, and after 220Kph (135Mph), the car would start to shudder very heavily.
I traced this problem to the fact that if you look in the door sill of the car, it gives you some measurements as of to wheel combinations, and I found that the Schnitzer type 2 wheels I got, were all 17x8.5 all round. But the 540 would have needed 17x8 in front, and 17x9 in the back.
We took the wheels out, and we found out that the OFFSET in the wheels is WRONG for the front of the car, but it is right on the dot for the rear axle.
So, what to do ? well, I had to BUY myself a new set of wheels, namely the Type 32 17" from BMW ( I think I have a pic of that in my set below, where you see a friend of mine in a gas station).
The car now drives like a dream. !!!!! Immediately after slapping in the new wheels, the car felt so good, that I did several 250Kph runs, and also did a land speed record (Brisbane-Mt. Isa in 12:20 (that's 1890 kilometers))
Now BMW has sold my old wheels, but I am 1300 AU dollars (about 800 US$). short.
Who is at fault ? BMW for selling me this without knowing it is the wrong package ? or AC-Schnitzer, WHO ACTUALLY RECOMMENDS THAT WHEEL PACKAGE ON THE 5 SERIES !!!!!!!
I tried to complain, to no avail. I need some people to try this, and see that it does not work, and join me to make this public, so other suckers like me don't get into that screwy situation anymore.
thx
Rob.
