I don't suggest that you play with offset by using spacers, if the wheels would have worked better in a diffrent offset, we would have them build the wheel that way.

Then why does TireRack supply spacers with some wheels?

The offsets on the type C and M are et 40, where the Emotion is an et 20. they are both correct fittments and will work fine with no mods other than the rear fender.

No, an et40 rim is not recomended, and probably won't work on an e28. (Unless you change the offset using spacers, which we agreed is a bad practice...).

Further if it rubs at et20, then how does an change of almost an inch not change the clearance by at least an inch?
