Larger wheels *usually* weigh more than smaller wheels, but not always. It is true that more unsprung weight (wheels and tires) can have a negative effect on the handling dynamics of a car. This is why most folks who do a wheel/tire upgrade also do a spring/shock upgrade. The stiffer springs and shocks are a beter match for the larger wheels and shorter tire sidewalls.

The shorter sidewall and wider contact patch of the bigger tires will provide better turn in and mor grip.

In my opinion the wheels and tires would have to be significantly heavier in order to effect acceleration at all.

So, given the proper suspension set up, and quality wheels and tires 18"ers will improve your car's handling at the expense of ride quality.
