1. The wheel size and offset (20mm) are correct and I'm using the appropriate hub centric rings purchased from Tire Rack. I have checked that all the hub centric rings are in place correctly.
2. The tires are 235-45 ZR 17 Dunlop 8000's also purchased from Tire Rack (order #3362220)
3. The used rims have all been checked for run-out on a Hunter GSP 9700.
4. Originally the tires were balanced on a standard balancer and they vibrated.
5. So I drove 30 miles to the closest guy with a Hunter GSP 9700 Vibration Analyzer who informed me that two of the tires had excessive "force variation" and should be replaced in order to eliminate the vibes.
6. Tire rack agreed to replace the tires.
7. After TWO balancing sessions on the GSP 9700 with the new tires (they still had fairly high "force variation" according to the machine), the car is much better, but still has a slight but very noticeable vibration that was not there before the new wheel/tire set-up. It actually took about two days of driving for me to notice it consistently. It's more like a thrumming above 60 mph that you can hear more than feel. The faster I go, the worse it gets until you can definitely feel the shuddering. It's similar to the low frequency thrumming sound you get at certain speeds with the sunroof or the rear windows open. The steering wheel does not shake at all so I think it's coming from the back. It's VERY annoying on long trips.
8. I have the exact same tire in a 16" size on my wife's VW and they work great.
9. I'm too embarrassed to call Tire Rack AGAIN, and I don't want to drive another 60 miles to have the guy with the balancer tell me he has done everything he can.
I'm about to put the old tires back on just to see if by some bizarre coincidence something besides the new tires is causing my problems.
Does anyone have any brilliant suggestions as to what else might be causing these problems.
