I'm running 235/40/17's on my '93 325is, with 17x8 wheels. No problems. Can't compare to 225/45 though, because I got the wheels WITH the 235's. Hope that helps.

: I have a BMW 323i with sytle 44 17x8 seven spoke wheels. I'm running 225/45's right now, but I'm wondering if I can go a little wider with 235's, either 45 or 40. Is this possible without any side effects?
