Safe to use wheel spacers? (archive)

Hi Folks,
Just bought a BMW540i 6spd (e34).
I want to used a set of new e39
wheels on this vehicle, but to do so
requires the use of a hub diam adapter (thanks
to the folks at Tire Rack for supplying them)
plus a 5mm spacer to correct for offset differences.

Someone told me this was an absolute no-no for
a car that would be driven on a race track for
"driver school" events.

Can anyone confirm/deny this opinion?

Wheels: 8"x17" front and 9"x17" rear
to replace 7"x15"s all around.
Thanks

John Feng
