I guess you and I were in the same situation. Snow tires were in short supply for M3s last winter. I would have never trusted the Tire Rack sales person and put 215/45 on my M3. Not only are they too narrow for the rear, but the overall diameter is less so the car would sit lower and wheelspin would be a little easier in snow. Sounds like the salesperson wanted to desperately sell you a bad size.
: bought some 215/45-17 pirelli snows for my stock M3 wheels (7.5 F/8.5 R) from tirerack for winter of 99..
: was told yadda yadda yadda they'll fit but guess what - nope..
: went to 3 of their recommended tire installers and they told me 215's were too narrow for 8.5 rim so they refused to install them..
: i called customer service to say i wanted to return them and told them exactly what the 3 recommended installers told me..
: i was given a hard time - they finally ended up sending UPS to my house and they took the tires back after much wasted time on phone.
