I know that Tire Rack needs improvement. I ordered $3,000 of stuff from them (for 3 different cars, all on one order) and the guy tried selling stuff that was the wrong size (because he did not have the right size) and he charged me full shipping for all three sets, even though they were going out the door at once, to the same address. The prices were all different from when I called just a few days earlier.

I guess you and I were in the same situation. Snow tires were in short supply for M3s last winter. I would have never trusted the Tire Rack sales person and put 215/45 on my M3. Not only are they too narrow for the rear, but the overall diameter is less so the car would sit lower and wheelspin would be a little easier in snow. Sounds like the salesperson wanted to desperately sell you a bad size.

: bought some 215/45-17 pirelli snows for my stock M3 wheels (7.5 F/8.5 R) from tirerack for winter of 99..
: was told yadda yadda yadda they'll fit but guess what - nope..
: went to 3 of their recommended tire installers and they told me 215's were too narrow for 8.5 rim so they refused to install them..
: i called customer service to say i wanted to return them and told them exactly what the 3 recommended installers told me..
: i was given a hard time - they finally ended up sending UPS to my house and they took the tires back after much wasted time on phone.
