17" E34 M5 wheels on E30 M3 (archive)

Hi folks. I just acquired an '88 M3, low miles, one owner. I want to use the 17" E34 M5 wheels left over from my now-sold '93 525i turbo on the M3. (I originally bought these from a guy who had them on an E30 M3, without using any spacers.)

Questions: Is the offset of the E34 M5 wheels, which I believe is 20mm, the same as the E30 M3, or do I need spacers?

Also, I know many people who put 17" wheels on the E30 use a 215/40-17 tire size. I'd like to use something a little wider if possible, as the E34 M5 wheels were originally fitted with 235s. It seems like a 225/40-17 would be ideal, only +0.9% difference from the stock 205/55-15s. However, Tire Rack doesn't have any max performance rubber in that size. Has anyone used 225/35-17s on the E30 M3? There are at least two choices in that size, which is -2.8% difference from stock. Or should I stick with 215/40-17s? Thanks.
