Spacer ring needed for E39 wheels on an E34? (archive)

Question:
Have set of BMW OEM 8"x17" and 9"x17" e39 sport wheels.
Have hub bore adapters from Tire rack (thanks).

Is a spacer needed for fitting these on an e34
using a 255/40x17" in the rear? (The 9x17's show
an offset ET23 on the rim)
