Steve,
I just laboured over tire size so I will give you my two cents. I went for 16" as well because I don't want to deal with the increase in potential for a bent rim. If you are not wanting to swap tires then I would go to an all season rather than the performance tires you mentioned. I went to a Dunlop D60 A2 because they were rated second to Michelin in Consumer Reports and listed as their "best buy" (at $64 who could argue). The wider tire you mentioned may pose a problem in winter as generally you want a narrower tire for the snow. I went for 205/55 and will probably still look for a winter tire but I live in Canada.
If it looks like a bad winter then they are coming off.
Those are good tires you mentioned. I am 36 and well past my boy racer stage so others may say "shoulda went 17" and "get pole positions" blah blah blah.
Good Luck
Dermot

TireRack guys or anyaone else willing to chime in. I'm looking to upgrade the 205/55-16 GS-A's on my 323i with 225/50-16's (seems to be the most recommended size). Currently, I'm leaning towards either Dunlop SP-9000, Dunlop SP-5000, or Pirelli P7000 SuperSport. What would you recommend, given the following:

1. retaining stock 16 x 7 wheels
2. not really in the mood to change out tires/wheels for winter. For reference - I had a set of Pirelli P7000 SuperSports that were acceptable in the winter on my old Maxima.
3. As much performance as I can get with reasonable tread life (30-35K+), low noise & good ride qualities.

Feel free to recommend something other than the tires I mentioned, if appropriate.

Thnx!
