Steel wheels for winter on a 97' 540i (archive)

I realize on this site alloy wheels are recommended for a 97' BMW 540i. However, I just was curious to know if there is a technical reason why steel wheels would not work instead? I will be making a decision on tires/wheels very soon as winter up here in New England is fast approaching.
