Tire Rack Question: 18" vs 17" for 540i/6sp (archive)

My '99 540i/6sp w/Dinan Stage III suspension needs new tires.

I am considering Bridgestone S-02 PP. Question: How much performance benefit (especially in the wet) is there in going to 18" wheels and f 245/40/18, r 265/35/18 versus OEM sizing (f 235/45/17, r 255/40/17)?

Effectively BMW has already equiped this car w/ Plus 1 wheel sizing. W/the BS S02 (or better, if there are better alternatives) tires it should have pretty good adhesion for a sedan.

The downside to 18" wheels seem to include: (a) cost of new wheels; (b) ride quality penalty; (c) increased rim vulnerability to curbs, potholes, etc.; (d) incapatible w/ spare (235/45/17 on 17x8 OEM rim).

What is your assessment?

Thanks for the help.
