I have a '99 540i/6sp and offer my personal experience.

I bought the Dunlop Wintersports + OEM size Borbet T wheels (from Tirerack) and had excellent results. W/snows I could back out of my steep driveway in the snow and had good results on snow-covered highways. I live in NY area and work in Boston area so it requires a drive up & back each week. There were a number of trips in snow.

The Dunlops handled much better than other less sports oriented snow tires that I've used. If you are doing winter rallys in Minnesota, ice racing or the Monte Carlo rallye, you will want a more aggressive (and probably narrower) snow tire. The Dunlops are no match for the studded Gislivads on our old Acura Legend in really serious snow or on black ice, but the Gislivads were noisy, and handled poorly on dry pavement.

Yet another winter tire question!!!

I have a BMW 540i/6 and I am looking for winter tires. However, excellent dry and wet performance and handling is more important to me than absolute snow performance - I will only see a few days of snow. In addition, I am looking for a quiet riding tire.

I will mount the winter tires on my OEM rims - front 235/45/17 and rear 255/40/17. I think my choices are limited to Mich Pilot Alpin, Dunlop M2, and Pirelli 210 asym.

What do you recommend for my needs?
