Thanks for your input.
I thought a little about 18" Breyton Magics, but concluded that any difference in adhesion would miniscule. Aaron of Tire Rack noted that the lower section would yield a little quicker response, but its hard to see that there is much benefit. I've just ordered a set of 17" Bridgestone S-02 Pole Positions in stock size for my OEM wheels. Others on the BMW 5's Forum have had good things to say about these tires versus the Dunlop 2000 OEM rubber, especially in the wet.Its pretty damn rare I get a chance to get close to using all of my 540i/6sp's power, brakes or adhesion on the street, so the tradeoffs for 18" wheels didn't really seem persuasive. Also - another $1500 or so that might otherwise be added to the M5 fund.

Don't forget the weight penalty - larger wheels weight more.
I seriously doubt you would see any real handling improvements in (aggressive) street use. I experience a far greater impact on handling from tire selection than going from 17 to 18.
Also, wider tires may worsen the numb-on-center feel of the 540i steering.
Thanks for your feedback on the Dunlop winters.
