I have a '99 540i/6sp acquired in 3/99 that now has about 31K miles

The reason for going -1 is that I'm looking to use these only in inclimate weather If it's snowy or icey I don't really care wether or not it handles similarly to dry.

Going -1 would significantly reduce the width of the tire thereby increasing the grip in snow and ice. It only take about 10 minutes to change them out for the good stuff if you have the right tools.
