I have a good hydraulic floor jack and elec. impact wrench and it takes me enough longer than that so I'm not anxious to do it more than twice/winter - once on/then off. I don't put my snows on until there is enough snow on the ground that I can't get out of the driveway without them. Then I get them off as early in March as possible, knowing that if we get hit with a early spring storm I may need to put them back on. The combination of higher performance and BMW's DSC system makes driving w/the snows satisfactory in either snow or dry roads.
I have a '99 540i/6sp acquired in 3/99 that now has about 31K miles The reason for going -1 is that I'm looking to use these only in inclimate weather If it's snowy or icey I don't really care wether or not it handles similarly to dry.
Going -1 would significantly reduce the width of the tire thereby increasing the grip in snow and ice. It only take about 10 minutes to change them out for the good stuff if you have the right tools.
