How much new wheel/tire pkg improve handling? (mor (archive)

I have a 1997 528i premium package. Nice ride, for sure. However, when compared to my old 3 series, which had the sport package, the steering and handling is too imprecise and soft. I have read that wider wheels and low profile tires really help. I would like to mimic the handling and set-up (17" wheels) of the e39 sport package; I know I would have to go to new springs, etc. as well, but wheels/tires are a palce to start, right?
Anyway, please let me know what you think re: the extent of the improvement I could see.
