I'm about to put Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 225/55 HR16s on our Z3 coupe to replace the MXM 255/50 ZR16 original tires for the winter. The MXM4s of this size on our Volvo S80 have performed very well indeed on snow-packed and slushy roads as well as dry roads. The local BMW service folks say this slight increase in diameter is fine as there is still ample clearance in the wheel wells; just don't go any bigger.

In reading Tire Rack's web site Tire Specs for these tires, the 225/55 tire is about 3.5% larger in diameter than the 225/50. Yet the Revs per Mile listing is less than 1% more. Why the disparity?

Thanks for your support.

Bart
