Even if I'm using the original BMW 17" wheels that leave some the tires far from the fender lip?

I assume you are speaking about 17 inch wheel diameters??? If so the widest you can use up front that works correct is the 225/45/17. a 235/40/17 would fit, but it is a bit short when paired up with your rear sizing. For the rear the 245/40/17 is the widest with no mods done to the car. On the 328CI, you can squeeze a 255/40/17 in the rear, but only if you have the felder lips rolled back there.
