Snow Tire Report - Dunlop Sport M2's (archive)

I recently purchased the Dunlop M2 winter tires from Tirerack for my '00 540i/6. No snow yet, but I've driven them in wet and dry in 30 deg. temperature. My summer tires are stock Dunlop 2000E's - which I regard as a very decent but not radical high performance tire. Mounting and balancing cost me $8 per tire.

I am extremely pleased with the wet and dry handling of the Dunlop M2's. There is a slight loss of grip in the dry vs. the 2000E's - noticeable only by the traction control intervening a little earlier than it usually does, e.g. hard acceleration coming out of a turn. But, still superior in the dry to many "all season" tires like the MXV4! The grip in the wet is far superior to the 2000E's.

Comfort is very good - I detect no difference. Noise - basically a very slight drone is noticeable which is not present with the 2000E's - actually only noticeable around 40-60 mph. Above that, wind noise masks any difference. Maybe also a bit louder over payment joints. Much quieter than I ever anticipated.

This tire is a huge improvement over my last set of snow tires - but that was over 10 years ago. Technology certainly has changed.

I will report on snow performance as soon as we have some of the white stuff.

Thanks to Aaron at Tirerack for his excellent service.

Dan
