17" Tires mounting on a non-Sport E39 (archive)

Can I upgrade to 17" rims on my non-sport '97 528 without doing the springs and shocks immediately. I want to do both the springs and shocks at the same time, but would like to do the rims first. Although there will be a visible gap, other than cosmetic reasons, are there any other problems with doing the upgrades in this order?
