which brings up another issue.. the wheels will be more prone to curb rash.

the only way to ensure you won't regret making the purchase is to see the tire you want on an 8.5 inch rim. there's alot of variation from manufacturer to manufacturer.

e.g. pirelli P7000 225/40R18s looked odd on 18 inch Hammanns while Dunlop W10s did not. also if you look at a pilot MXX3 on a 17x8.5 it looks 'stretched' while some newer tires do not (including the pilot sport).

it would be nice if someone compiled a poll/made a chart of fir, prehaps with pics? (not it!)
