Confused about 2000 Z3 (2.3) wheel/tire upgrade (archive)

Am I mistaken, or can a 2000 Z3 (2.3) not be upgraded to something in a 17" wheel? I want to upgrade from these 16" spokes with 225/50R 16's, and Tirerack
and many others list 17" and even some 18" wheels available for the 2.3. But I've noticed that the BMW brochure for the 2.3 only lists 17" wheels as an
"option" for the 2.8 model. What gives? Why wouldn't they show them available for the 2.3?

Is there some kind of suspension upgrade or whatnot necessary to do this? What I'd like to do is maybe run a 17 x 7.5 front and 17 x 8.5 rear, with 225/45ZR-17 and 245/40ZR-17 respectively. Any advice is appreciated.
