Lay the two rims face down on the floor (with or without tires)
lay a straight edge across the top of the stock rim.
measure the distance to the face that mounts on the hub
Now, lay the straight edge across the top of the replacement.
measure the distance from the straight edge to the face in the wheel that mounts to the hub.

Hopefully the distance is the same.

If the replacement rim distance is shorter, that is the amount the tire will sit away from the car over stock. Very much may have a derogatory affect on steering geometry.

If the replacement rim distance is longer, the difference is the amount of spacer you will need to get the wheel out to the same location as stock and not rub springs or other metal parts.

Just went through this on late mod 3 series wheels on my 1980 528i and found I needed 30mm adaptors (one inch +).
Not too happy about that, but the wheels/tires were a steal.
