Thinking of doing staggered setup 7.5 front, 8.5 rears on my 95 M3/2. With a 17" 8.5 rear, what is the widest tire you recommend?

I've heard a 245 x 40 x 17 and 255 x 35 x 17.

Which is correct, better, or recommended?
