From one BMW owner to another, you cannot use those alternative sizes with your current rims. The 220 55 390 sizes are metric and equate to some weird diameter in the ballpark of 15.5 inches. I believe these were an option on your car. On my 7, they were an option and I'm glad I switched away from them. As it stands, these tires are old technology and the breakaway characteristics of the TRXs are atrocious.

The only way you could use those alternate sizes you mentioned is if you had the original rims that were offered as standard equipment on the car. You can call some wrecking yards if you want to pursue further.

I think the best idea is to have fun and splurge for new rims. I have 17x8.5 and run 235/45-17 on my '85 735i. The handling has been transformed.
