Tire/Wheel recommendations for '98 328i (archive)

Current setup is stock 15" rims. Time for new rubber in the spring. Considering moving up to 17" wheels but am more concerned with maintaining the integrity of the ride/handling than looks. After reading all the woes relating to bushings, spacers, lug torque sttings, etc. (and not wanting to deal with any of this), should I put the $$$ into the best-performing set of 15" tires, or go with the 17's? Thanks.
