I have BBS RCs size 17x8.5 and am running 235/45-17 tires. This package was purchased from Tirerack.

I would like to lower the profile of the tire but was told that 245/40 would not fit, and I'm reluctant to run 235/40 because I don't want to damage the rims.

How about 225/45? Since there's about 10mm less width than the 235/45, would the only difference be primarily visual as opposed to a noticeable change in performance?

I would not recommend to lower the profile any lower than the 235/45R17. From the original 225/60R15 you are already 2.3" lower profile. The 245's will not fit with this wheel. If you have any other questions let me know. Thank you
