Bull bars have their place. I have owned Toyota Landcruisers for years and used to go off road alot. They are great for pushing other vehicles and avoiding major damage while messing around trails, but I have a good story.

I was traveling about 40 mph in my 1995 Toyota Landcruiser and a car pulled out in front of me. I never got to touch my brake and I broadsided the car, totaling the other vehicle. I had a WAAG brush bar (1-piece) and I believe it deflected a great deal of the impact to the chassis, spareing the passenger compartment. BUT, due to the way that aftermarket brush bars are sometimes attached, my air bags did not deploy. In this case it was not a big deal since my cruiser outweighed the other vehicle by alot! But food for thought. Air Bag sensors are in the bumpers. BMW has engineered great safety into the X5 and I won't be messing around with that. If I'm going to be surrounded by 97 air bags, I want them to deploy if necessary.

To each his own though. Best wishes to all!

X5 3.0 in 1 week!!!!!

: I was in the parts dept. of my local BMW dealer yesterday and he showed me a brush bar (also called bull bar) that was made for the X5. He thought it was stupid because it is some sort of plastic, NOT metal. It will provide no added protection or function well as a 'push' bar. It is simply for looks. It looks nice, but why didn't BMW make it like every other bar, with strong metal! I hope an aftermarket co. comes out with one... and it would be nice to see it go over the entire front of the vehicle. I think I'm going to wait until the 2002 X5... these guys have some improvements to make... plus I'd like to have that touch screen DVD nav. system which comes out then.
