I took my X5 to Home Depot--I couldn't put the proverbial 4 x 8 piece of plywood in...but I didn't need that. I had them cut it in half, and I DID put the two 4 x 4's in the back, plus some Metro shelving from the restaurant supply. After that, I filled the X with recycling, and then towed a 5 x 10 foot trailer to the dump/recycling station.
So...it DOES have some utility. As to all the complaints that the cargo space is too small: well, so is the Z3 trunk. It depends on what you need to haul. If I needed a giant trunk, I'd get a peekup truck with a cap.
Now, to suspension: We ordered the 3.0 without sport suspension. My wife thought the ride was sharp enough. I haven't tried the 3.0 sport suspension, though, so I don't know how it feels. I admit that I would like a little less body roll, though, when driving Redwood Rd with some 2nd/3rd gear corners. On the other hand, I can jump into my 1996 328is ("S" for sport) and get the adrenaline going.
I suggest that it depends on how & where you drive, what you'll be doing with the X: if its mostly freeway & city, or if you're in an area where there's lots of winter potholes & frost heaves, then maybe std. suspension. If your idea of fun is trying to get the DSC to work on freeway on ramps, or downshift to 2nd just before you turn it to a tight apex, then the sport suspension will enhance the fun quotient. (I haven't got the DSC to flash yet--I had the 328 during last week's rain here: no DSC and old tires, so I was VERY careful.)
based on my 328is I suggest that the sprot option may not be worth it for cosmetic reasons, but if you want the suspension enhancements then it is cost-effective.
Also, if you're doing any long drives, get the lumbar option. These seats are much less supportive than my 328 or older 525.

OK, I am inching closer to buying the 3.0i, unless the wife stages a major revolt.

Today's question is "Sports package or no?" I have only driven the X5 with the sports package. One review I read said that the ride was too harsh, but that wasn't my experience. I like the sports steering wheel and some of the cosmetic touches, but overall it feels like a $2500 rip-off unless the handling is really THAT much better.
