I went with the Thule Weekender, and am happy with the decision.

As Bob mentioned, the Thule crossbars attaches the easiest to the X5. They also sit slightly lower (about 1 inch) than the others. This was important to me because I wanted to be able to fit into my garage, which I can barely do with the box on top.

I would have gone with a Packasport, but they didn't have one the shape I needed -- low profile and short. I don't like the way the long boxes hang off the front/rear of the X5.

There weren't any dealers in the Chicago area that had the BMW box in stock, so I wasn't able to examine it. From the picture in the catalogue, it looks like it might be made by packasport (two latches on the back).

Sportsrack has a cargo box that mounts on a hitch.
