All the other M cars are 6-speed manuals, why would the MX5 (unfortunately, that's the official designation of the Mazda Miata...) be any different?

It's probably going to be called the X5 "M". Not MX5. And I'll also be willing to bet that if produced, it WILL be offered with Steptronic too. Otherwise they will lose many potential customers.
