Upgrading is extremely difficult though possible if an aftermarket kit is available. Those bulbs are merely tints on the bulb itself to produce the white light spectrum similar to the xenons. True high intensity discharge lamps, in this case the xenon option, requires a ballast that steps up the voltage to around 10,000v to get the light going. This explains why the light brightens up over time upon turning it on. In addition, you need all the self-leveling mechanism and etc. Only worthwhile to upgrade if Bosch or whoever manufactures the X5 xenon offers an aftermarket kit.
From the instructions found at Jimmy's website (http://geocities.com/bmwxenon), it seems that installing the Xenon-like bulb is as simple as changing out the headlight bulb itself. Are you telling me that there're more to it for the X5?
Thanks for everyone's comments.
I too have had this same issue. I've been working
with Jimmy (see the 5 series brd) to get installation instructions for his halogens on the X5. Nothing yet, but many people seem to be happy with the bulbs, and their only $125.
