What does deposit mean??? (archive)

A couple of weeks ago I placed a $1000 deposit on an X5 my dealer had on the lot. I was just going away for the weekend and would close the deal completly when I got back. After returning, It turns out my dealer had "accidently" sold my car to someone else (they actually claim that the car was already sold to someone else, before they sold it to me, and that the other sales rep hadn't marked the car as sold...)

Instead of getting my X5 3.0 in two weeks, I now have to custom order one. The car will be delivered around mid-november instead of in beginning of september.

Since we don't have another car (just moved to the US and didn't bring old 328i E46), we're now forced to have a rental car while we're waiting for our X5.

What do you think is an appropriate discount on the X5 given that I had actually placed a deposit on a car and therefore "owned" one? We're claiming that BMW at least should reimburse all extra costs (~$2000) for a rental car during the extra period we now have to wait! BMW offers us $500...
