While the cargo area is clearly not as large as many full size suv's, I think the lack-of-space argument has been exaggerated. The rear area (with the seats up) looks smaller than it is because of the way the cargo cover sits above it. Two to three full size golf bags fit easily plus room on top of the bags to stack other stuff. I took my X5 away for a week and with two sets of clubs, a medium size duffel, a couple of other things, and some creative packing I was able to fit it all in the back AND still close the cargo cover.
