you are absolutely right about losing power and milage....when you're heavy into throttle ie, load on engine. if you are light on throttle, easy driving conditions, differnces between regular and premium is there but minimal. But as we all know having the X5 and not tipping into the throttle and hearing that 4.4 roar and feeling that push in the back is pretty difficult not to do :)
Also it was true that premium had more detergent in it and helped keep that injectors cleaner, longer. However the oil companies have increased their detergent level in regular because of injectors clogging and the ensuing complaints and smog (especially in California)under smog waranty.
I use premium almost of the time but I hate paying up to $2.49 a gallon and being ripped off when it is possible to use regular and go easy until I fill up again with premium.
