If you're near a transmission tower or high voltage power lines you might have problems with the transmission as the electrical field will interfere with the signal the key sends. If there is too many errors in the signal the car will not open the doors.

I hear that the key's battery is charged by the ignition...Is that true?

Unless BMW is using a new key that is different than what's in the E36, E38 and E39's this is not true. RTFM, it should explain this.
