After seeing this thread float by a few times these last couple weeks, I though I'd share my experience and hope it helps some of you buy for less than MSRP>

I have bought my last 2 vehicles (4Runners) through http://carpoint.msn.com/ and have paid between 1.5% and 3% over invoice w\o having to haggle over price. I build the vehicle with the options I want and post to about 3 dealers in the area. The dealers bargin for my business. What a concept. It's a beautiful thing!

The X5 has been slighlty different in that dealers have come off of MSRP up to 3% rather than go up from invoice. In my case, I submited my x5 3.0 to 4 different dealers. The first to respond knocked off $1K, the second $1500, the last 2 stopped at $1600 off MSRP. From what I understand, BMW cut the margin from 16 or 17% to 9% markup. Between that and availability, they're being a little tighter on what they're sold for.

For me, I'll never buy a car direct again without shopping the price online FIRST! You get to the bottom line a lot quicker without having to waste your time in a showroom while the salesperson "checks with their manager".

One word from experience: If you have already worked a deal with a dealer in person, you will not better that deal (with that dealer) via the net. The departments that deal with the showroom floor and the internet\fleet are traditionaly different, but they will still honor an in-house deal which has already been struck, even if it means losing business to another dealership.
