I live in Northern CA and bought my X5 (black/black 3.0) from a family member who is a dealer in Atlanta, GA. Went to the DMV to register and pay sales tax and was told they could not take my money (or register the car) because there was no proof that the car complied with CA emissions standards. They could not locate an emissions compliance sticker.

Checked that out with a local dealer (Concord BMW) as well as the dealership in Atlanta, and both thought that the DMV person was nuts. The X5 does comply with emissions standards in all 50 states. But I'm not aware (nor was either dealer) of any emissions sticker on the car. Can anyone tell me what that did to register their car in CA after purchase from out-of-state. (What documents were you required to give to the DMV?) My suspicion is that I got an incompetent DMV person and that I need to just visit another office. Any thoughts will be MUCH appreciated.
