It all depends on how you look at it. Will you have more oil leaks and little anoying issues? Yes. I have a DiscoII and have had BMW's all my life. I hope to buy a Defender if I can find room for it. The LandRovers are built to be 3rd world vehicles with added comfort (okay Defender is just 3rd world vehicle). Anyone can fix one easily. The parts are purpose built. Not off the shelf parts like on the Jeeps. The Axels and drive train are stronger than any factory vehicle that I have seen. So what I am saying is that it will likely get you home but the wipers may not work. This is probably why they used to include a manual overide for the wipers in the old Series vehicles =)

The X5 is in a different class. I think of Land Rovers as more of a niche vehicle like the BMW ///M vehicles are niche vehicles.
