I agreed with Al, the HDC most likely will not work ina steep down hill gravel road. I am not talk about little bunny hills, what I mentioned was descending from 10000 feet down to 4000 feet in a distance of 4 -5 miles. You can figure out the grade, steep down hill in gravel dirt road is scary, wheel lock up by the brake but the weight of the body just keep on sliding. Low gear range in 4 wheel drive (braking with engine speed) is probably the only way to keep the vehicle in slow speed. The Toyota 4_Runner did it OK with 4_wheel drive in low range, but brake still got pretty hot (hot enough hand can not touch alloy wheel). Am sure Al's Rover Discovery would handle this type of situation without much problem. I have no doubt that X5 4.4 would climb the hill with it 282HP muscle, but coming down is really questionable, it lack of low gear range.
