Door Handles Peeling - Defect -What is being done (archive)

Currently the drivers side door handle (not the door opener handle) is beginning to peel and show considerable wear given this vechicle was picked up in July of 2000. I am concerned about the others also peeling. You can see how it appears to be a clear piece of plastic, with a coating of paint to match the interior.

I remember reading of others having this same problem. What was done to correct this?

It seems to be a design and/or material defect. What is BMW doing about this? It seems these should be completely replaced with better materials.
