The PDC also gives warning when you are going forward. It stays on after you have been in reverse, or can be turned on manually. I haven't needed that part of the feature, though.

As I remember, my manual 328i (E36, 1996) took a few thousand miles before the shifter felt like it was breaking in. I have the same Getrag tranny that's in the E36 M3, and I don't know who made the manual in the X5. The slushbox is a GM product (BMW has been buying from ZF and GM) and the transfer case is from New Process. I saw the labels while wandering under my "X" during an oil change, and the service bulletin for the front diff. oil change. (This can take 2 to 4 hours, more if there are seal leaks.)

Just got my first BMW -- a new manual shift X5 3.0 w/ climate, activity, leather, xenon, PDC, CD, non-sport, non-premium.

Some first impressions.

1. Handling & drive is great. Pickup with the manual shift is very good. Stick shift doesn't feel as good as my 1993 Mazda MX-6 LS which I really enjoyed. Are all BMW shifters like this?
2. Really wish the passenger seat was electrically adjustable. Paying for leather was probably a mistake because the differences to leatherette is so small.
3. Fit and finish is excellent. Engine is a bit loud when at rest. PDC is useful.

On my to do list:
1. Install my Motorola Timeport phone w/ handsfree kit into the car. Too bad it won't be integrated with the stereo, etc. It's a real disservice to the customers that BMW makes the phone interface proprietary.
2. When the DVD based navigation system comes out, I'd like to get it installed.

Everything else is pretty good so far.
