I guess you are asking should you buy the v6 or the v8. I might have a little insight for you. You have to ask your self about the majority of driving you expect to encounter while piloting your X5. I live in the S.F. Bay Area where traffic is very dense. The v8 is not efficient because of rapid and frequent changes in speed.
On the highway going to the mountains or the sea, I can stretch the V8 out, keeping a constant speed, and even realize some reasonable gas milage. I can also tow my dive boat with ease, sometimes forgetting its back there.

But if your are just going to do urban driving and occasional highway trips, then I think the V6 is most practical.
