The speedometer in my 3.0i BMW X5(mfg 5/2000) has always been off by about 5% (display=76mph, actual is 72mph). Called the service department of my local BMW dealer. He said that it is totally electronic, and can't be adjusted by them.

HEY, this is controlled by a PLC that should be adjustable with the right connections, hardware and software! Does anyone know how or who to contact to get this thing corrected.

Considering the price paid for all the gismos in this vehicle, you would think they could at least adjust the speedometer to read correctly!

BMW issued a bulletin in which they say that 7.4 mph indicated higher than real speed is within their specs/tolerance. But, the speedometer can not indicate slower than the car is really going. They have zero tolerance for that. I asked to have mine adjusted. It reads 2.4 mph faster than the car is going. The dealer said no, that was within tolerance. I posted all this on this board a few weeks ago, including their bulletin. GOod luck!
