I have taken delivery on 11/28/2000 of a new X5 4.4 with a BMW CPT 7000 TDMA digital phone (AT&T digital one rate plan). The phone worked correctly for four days both as a portable and as an in-vehicle "hands free" installation. Today, I took the time to step through phone's owner manual. When I was operating the phone through the On-Board Monitor (also used for the nav system) the phone system became non-operative. Initially the "telephone" function became "greyed" out on the OBM. I was unable to use the phone in any manner while installed in the ejector box. When I removed the Star-Tac phone from the ejector box, it worked fine. When I placed the Star-Tac (while powered on) into the ejector box, the handheld display immediately stated "Powering off" and then promptly did so. When I removed the Star-Tac from the ejector box the phone was then able to resume normal operation. Hoping for a time-out counter or "soft reset", I left the car for ten minutes. Now the "telephone" function doesn't even appear in the OBM and the Star-Tac stays powered on (but completely inoperative as a "hands free" phone) when plugged in. I strongly suspect a software bug in the X5. Does anyone know how to reset the on-board software so I don't have to waste time at the dealer on Monday?
