1. Do you generally get what you pay for in auto sound?
2. How do you know a good shop from a bad one?
3. How is my warranty likely to be affected?
4. Does anyone have a package they can recommend?

Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

The most expensive part of your quotes should be the front speaker set. A good set of these should run anywhere from 400-1000. You do get what you pay for, for the most part. Same for installation. I personally would trust my local Ciruit City to install a tape player in a Honda, but that's about it. Go to a shop that speciallizes in expensive cars. Get customer referrals. I went to a local shop and the salesperson said that he didn't trust his shop with the X, he recommended another shop (same chain, though). The labor is the most critical part. The BMW warranty should not be affected for simple speaker upgrades, but if they install an amp, that might. Tell them that you have a lease (even if you don't) and it needs to be returned to stock condition. That way, they won't hack or remove anything. I would recommend JL Audio or MB Quart for the front speakers. The factory amp appears to be powerfull enough to drive them.
