That seems to be a problem when they are very new. When the black ages, even a month or two, it isn't as noticeable anymore. Several were trying to find out if it was metal or plastic, but no one never found out, to my knowledge.

See if you can call or write BMW NA. They will probably won't tell you anything because the material is proprietary or something, but it is worth a try.
