I was about to purchase a '98 M3 which was going to be made into my track car. The deal fell through but the X would have made an ideal tow vehicle.

If I'm not mistaken it can haul upto 5000 lbs. I'm fairly certain two members here (Gary Bossert and Will Turner) use it for this exact purpose. Bossert is a BMW CCA club racer. Turner competes in the Speedvision series. Neither of them post on this board but are in the X5 Registry so I'm sure you can e-mail your question to them directly.
