Not buying BMW phone is great move! (archive)

We opted not to have the cell phone installed at the factory, but is there any way (other than paying $2000. to a BMW dealer) to have a cell phone installed in the prewired X5? We have two startac phones (one from our mercedes and one regular) both of which, obviously fit the connection, but we're being told that BMW has to install "specially programmed" phones. Can we have this done at a startac dealer or any other suggestions???
Even our salesman thinks the phone price they charge is insane!!

The BMW phone system is severely limited! There is no way to use another phone in their system. Motorola wires the cheapest version of their StarTac phone for BMW to interface with the system in the car. Sorry,
